No official word has come from Facebook, but technical consultants are saying that they believe the social networking giant is performing unannounced site maintenance today.

Users around the world say the site is "up," but they cannot comment or post updates on their pages.

It is routine for companies to notify users when a site is going to be offline.  Because Facebook has yet to comment about the outage -- no, there is no official word on the company's Facebook page either -- there is growing speculation that there may be technical difficulties that are bigger in scope than the simple inability to post may imply.

Facebook currently appears in "read only" mode for many users, although some news agencies are reporting that the site is gradually coming back online. Until then, several people have turned to Twitter to meet their social media needs.
