If Roe Vs Wade Gets Overturned By Supreme Court, How Will It Affect Missourians?
Monday night, there was a leaked opinion from the Supreme Court that seems to indicate that they are in favor of overturning the landmark case Roe VS Wade. Overturning the landmark ruling could once again make abortion illegal in many U.S. states. It should be mentioned that this is just a draft, and not the final decision. No one is sure what the final ruling will be.
Roe Vs Wade was a landmark decision of the U.S Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. This is certainly an issue that certainly has been debated for a long time.
In 2019 the State of Missouri passed a law that prohibits abortion after eight weeks of gestation unless there is a critical medical reason. The legislation makes it a felony to perform non-emergent abortions after eight weeks. Currently, this law in under a legal challenge, but if the Supreme Court does overturn this law, this would certainly affect the legal challenge. You can get more details HERE.
Republican Senator Susan Collins, was trending yesterday because she commented on Supreme Court justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh saying in their appointment hearings that their responses about this issue would be "completely inconsistent with what they said in their hearings and in meetings in her office".
Whatever side of the aisle you fall on, this potential decision could change the landscape of our country. This could lead to a debate about expanding the Supreme Court, there certainly be protests, and if you make abortion illegal or put it in the hands of the states, then you could have to consider laws to help those who are forced to have a child, to avoid prosecution. If you want your voice to be heard, make sure you are registered to vote and vote in November.
