New Madrid Fault Triggers Quake Near Mississippi River
Never underestimate the New Madrid Fault to surprise you. A quake happened late Friday night that was strong enough to be felt in Missouri centered right next to the Mississippi River.
As I was doing my daily check of the USGS earthquake map, I noticed a New Madrid quake that seemed...different. It was nothing major at all, but it was an earthquake that someone did reported feeling in Marston, Missouri at 8:42pm Friday night, June 6, 2025.
It was a mild magnitude 2 quake that was felt, but it's not until you zoom into the map to see the exact location that it gets interesting. The epicenter of this minor New Madrid quake was nearly under the Mississippi River.
There's another interesting aspect to this relatively unimportant Missouri quake
If you look at maps of the magnitude 8 earthquakes that struck the New Madrid, Missouri area in 1811 and 1812, you'll notice that Friday night's quake was in nearly the same place as those historic quakes.
How many New Madrid Fault quakes have happened in the past 30 days?
According to the USGS, there have been 29 confirmed earthquakes in the past 30 days as this seismically-active part of America has seen an increase of activity in the past few weeks. That's why it's important to be earthquake aware in Missouri as you never know when the New Madrid Fault might ruin our day.
