Boonslick Regional Library in Sedalia is preparing a number of summertime activities around the theme of "libraries rock" for kids of all ages.

"Of course there's going to be a lot of music involved," said Jackie Oliphant with Boonslick Regional Library, "but also I thought I'd take another direction and have some 'rock' programs...about rocks! So we're going to do that, too. We've got a really big variety."

Reading clubs will allow kids chances to win various prizes based on the number of hours they spend reading during the summer. Participants will also be able to register for a grand-prize Walmart gift card. "Statistics show that kids who continue to read during the summer are more prepared to go back to school at the end of the summer," said Oliphant. "It's really important."

The annual write'rs workshop with local author Angela Roquet will also be back this summer. Teen participants write a short stories, which are collected and published in a book. "So far the kids who have been participating in this workshop have three books that have been published," said Oliphant.

Bothwell State Historic Lodge will be sponsoring a book club this summer. The staff will have different activities based on the book Misfortune Annie and the Locomotive Reaper for kids 9-12 during weekly meetings.

On Wednesdays there will also be bring your own lunch family movies. Bring you own lunch movies take place throughout the year, but in the summer the library is focusing on family-friendly movies, and are encouraging the public to come as a family. The movie

The summer reading kickoff at Boonslick Regional Library will take place on June 1 in the Library Meeting Room at 11 a.m. Dallas musician Matt Tolentino will be in town for the Scott Joplin Festival and will be performing during the kickoff event. The end of summer celebration will be July 26 at Bothwell State Park, where kids will participate in rock painting.
