A female shoplifting suspect is hospitalized after being shot by a suburban St. Louis police officer on the parking lot outside a grocery store.

St. Louis County police say the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Ladue, a well-to-do suburb. When a 37-year-old female officer attempted to arrest the woman, she allegedly resisted. Police say the officer shot the 33-year-old woman once in the torso during a struggle.

St. Louis County Police Sgt. Benjamin Granda says the woman is expected to survive. Ladue Police Chief Ken Andreski says in a statement that the department is praying for a “full recovery.”

The shooting is under investigation.

A second shoplifting suspect, a man, is being sought.
