Sedalia Battles Two House Fires Thursday Morning

On Thursday morning, Dec. 10, Sedalia Fire, Sedalia Police, and PCAD were dispatched to a reported house fire at 722 E. 9th Street.

While still working the fire, a second dispatch for another house fire four blocks away was received, and crews responded to that house fire as well.

The first house fire was at 722 E. 9th (southwest corner of 9th and Marvin). The fire department was dispatched at 6:53 a.m., and arrived they on scene at 6:57 a.m.  They cleared the scene at 10:05 a.m.

The fire involved a two-story residential home, reportedly unoccupied.
Heavy smoke and fire was showing upon firefighters' arrival.

Fire crews made an aggressive interior fire attack on the residence. Fire crews were pulled out of the residence due to increase in smoke and fire conditions. Fire crews used the aerial apparatus to knock down the fire that had vented through the roof of the structure.

After the knock down, fire crews attacked the fire with two 1.75-inch hand lines and one 2.5-inch hand line. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by 9 a.m.

Crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and while investigators determined the cause of the fire.

There were no utilities were on at this address. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

The State Fire Marshal called in to assist with investigation. The fire was ruled incendiary. The residence is a total loss.

Four blocks away, at 600 E. 10th (southeast corner of 10th and Ingram) a fire call was dispatched at 8:22 a.m. Crews arrived on scene at 8:23 a.m., and cleared the scene at 9:08 a.m.

It was a single-story, occupied residence.

Smoke was showing upon firefighters' arrival. SFD crews made an aggressive interior attack on the fire and were able to bring the fire under control in a quick manner. The State Fire Marshall was on scene to investigate the fire. Fire crews used 1- 1.75 inch hand line to extinguish the fire.

Utilities were on at this address

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilian personnel.

The fire was ruled accidental and the cause was determined to be a base board heating unit that failed.

The residence sustained about 30 percent damage.

In total, 20 Sedalia fire personnel were used to extinguish both fires. Pettis County Fire was requested via mutual aide to stand by in the event of a third fire inside the city limits.
