The Sedalia Police Department is investigating an email scam that has affected at least two businesses in the area.

In a press release, SPD says the scam begins with someone sending an email to the finance or personnel department of the business posing as an employee. The email will look like it’s coming from the employee, but it’s from an outside email address such as gmail, yahoo, and twc.

The person posing as the employee will reportedly ask that their direct deposit information be changed from their current bank account to an entirely different bank account.

The Sedalia Police Department suggests that any requests from employee’s to change their payroll preferences or direct deposit information be handled directly with the employee and in person if possible

It is also recommend that employers avoid sending payroll authorization or direct deposit forms via email.

Sedalia Police are investigating the source of the scam. At this time, no further information is available.
