Pacific Rim

Though 'Pacific Rim' only made a little over a hundred million dollars domestically, the film had not only passionate fans, but a much larger audience internationally, which helped bring the $200 million project into a place where today director Guillermo del Toro announced that 'Pacific Rim 2' will hit theaters April 7, 2017.

Two wildly different offerings hit theaters this weekend. The first is a sci-fi/action/thriller about monsters fighting giant robots; the other is the sequel to a surprisingly successful comedy featuring a set of four men acting like children.

As basically a three-word genre mash-up -- monsters vs. robots -- the announcement that Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures were making 'Pacific Rim' didn't really need to offer much more than just that siren-song simple idea.
