Relay for Life

Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.  Relay for Life of Pettis County will have its team captain and committee meeting on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement. Coming up this Saturday Feb. 16, you can help a local group with their Relay for Life efforts at the First Christian Church.

Hundreds of kids, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and pets showed up a Liberty Park in Sedalia on Saturday for the annual "Kids Fishing For a Cure" event.

Okay, I'm not going to give the weather any more chances.  It was 80.  Then it was in the 30s.  I'm going to boycott the weather, because when the shorts come out, they stay out. The last week of turkey season was a little tough, for me anyway.  Crappie are being caught and people are finding mushrooms.  The time is upon us and that makes me happy happy happy.

Team Happy Feet held their bear auction and dinner on Saturday night (April 27) at the Best Western. There were more bears donated than what the team thought they would receive and were pleased with the amount of people that themed their bears and cleaned them up to go to the Relay For Life. Kids, we're all interested in the Relay for Life.  And earlier this week, we talked about one event coming up this weekend to benefit the Relay: The Bear Auction.  But did you know there's another event for the Relay that same day?

A lot of different events are happening around us for the Relay For Life.  The Relay is almost a year-round event, really, because these teams work so hard to get fundraising going.  They do everything they can think of to get members, donations and awareness out there.  The actual Relay event isn't until June, but that doesn't mean teams aren't hard at work. Around this time of year a lot of groups are gearing up for the big Relay for Life Fundraiser.  It's a great cause, and I'm sure all of us in some way or another have been touched by cancer.

American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Pettis County are currently accepting nominations for the 2013 Caregiver of the Year.  The Third Annual Caregiver of the Year Award will be presented in honor of an unsung hero who has dedicated themselves to making the lives of those affected by cancer more comfortable and dignified.

Most everyone I know has been affected in some way or another by cancer.  Whether you know someone, are related to someone, or have been through it yourself, everybody knows just how hard that can be.
