Writing the headline "Ten Things That Should Never Be Flushed Down the Toilet" was just about the last thing I thought I'd be doing when I came to work this morning. That and searching for a halfway decent photo of a toilet. But this is important information that the world needs to know!

According to Southern Trust Home Services, the following items should not be flushed down the toilet:

  • Sanitary and baby wipes (even the ones that say they can be flushed)
  • Anything cotton
  • Paper Towels
  • Cigarette butts
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Medications
  • Dental floss
  • Kitty litter
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Fats, oils and grease

Most of these seem pretty common sense. The main reason that majority of items on the list shouldn't be flushed is because they can lead to clogged pipes. There are also environmental concerns with certain items, like cigarette butts and medications. A complete breakdown of why each item on the list shouldn't be flushed can be found online.

"We see it all the time," said Ted Puzio, owner of Southern Trust Home Services in a news release. "People flush lots of things down the toilet and don't think twice about the consequence until their toilet doesn't work anymore. We've found a lot of interesting items in clogged drains and think it's important to encourage people to be more careful with what they flush."

I hope that the next list Southern Trust Home Services puts out details exactly what some of those "interesting items in clogged drains" are. I bet there are a bunch of funny stories out there from plumbers about some of the things they've found in pipes.
