A three-year-old boy was killed after a truck backed over him in Smithville Friday night in Clay County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2014 Ford F-150, driven by 33-year-old Lacy D. James of Smithville, was in reverse at 8 Jolisa Court in Smithville around 11 p.m. when it struck a three-year-old male. The boy was transported to North Kansas City Hospital and later pronounced dead at 12:07 a.m. Saturday.

Smithville Police assisted the four Troopers on scene.

James was later arrested by the Patrol at 12:10 a.m. She was charged with felony driving while intoxicated, causing the death of another (non passenger), and driving while suspended.

James was taken to the Clay County Detention Center for a 12-hour hold.
