A Warrensburg man was killed in a freak accident that happened on US Highway 50 on Sunday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that an eastbound 2016 Ford, driven by 44-year-old Bonnie J. Seymour of Knob Noster at 1:16 p.m. when a trailer being towed by the Ford became disconnected and traveled through the median and struck a westbound 2015 Jeep head-on just east of Missouri 13. The Jeep then traveled off the left side of the roadway.

The driver of that Jeep, 63-year-old Walter Shannon, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:45 p.m. by Johnson County Coroner Clark Holdren. The body was taken to Sweeney, Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.

Shannon's passenger, 43-year-old Laura A. Shannon of Warrensburg, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Research Medical Center by Lifeflight Eagle.

The Jeep was totaled.

All were wearing seat belts, the report noted.

Warrensburg Police assisted the Troopers at the scene.
