If someone glanced at this weekend's box office, they could be forgiven for thinking they accidentally stepped into some kind of time portal. After all, films called 'Evil Dead' and 'Jurassic Park' were in the top five.

Sure, we can make all of the time travel jokes that we want about this week's new releases, but there's something that the remake of 'Evil Dead' has done that none of its predecessors could accomplish: it's sitting high and mighty atop the box office top ten. In one week, Fede Alvarez's remake/reboot/secret sequel has made more than 'The Evil Dead,' 'Evil Dead 2' and 'Army of Darkness' combined. Chew on that for a moment.

Done chewing? Anyway, that $26 million is a big victory for a reasonably inexpensive horror movie that wears its R-rating and excessive, brutal gore like a badge of honor. Most horror movies take a massive drop in their second week, but it'll be interesting to see the audience reaction to this one, since it may be the most violent mainstream studio movie ever made. Are audiences who grew up on 'Scream' and PG-13 J-horror remakes going to dig it? Sure, they made the 'Saw' films hits, but this movie eclipses them. In any case, we'll probably get an 'Evil Dead 2' soon if things don't go terribly wrong next week.

Elsewhere, the 3D re-release of 'Jurassic Park' opened to respectable numbers, taking in $18.2 million. Not to shabby for a twenty year old movie that everyone in the world has seen a dozen times and owns. Like the 3D version of 'Titantic,' it's a testament to just how beloved the film is and just how much it demands to be seen on the big screen with an audience. Will people stick around and drive up the gross like they did with 'Titanic'? Maybe. Hopefully. Because 'Jurassic Park' is still so freakin' good, guys.

Last week's champion, 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' dropped to second place with a $21 million gross and a $86.6 million total. $150 million is probably a sure thing, but that tumble is a little higher than anyone would've wanted. Right under it, 'The Croods' continued to exceed expectations, taking a tiny 21% drop and grossing another $21 million for a $125.8 million total. The DreamWorks Animation film has been dominating the family audience for the past few weeks and it doesn't look ready to slow down yet. Can it break $200 million? Maybe...but it has to do it before May, when all of the big Summer movies will arrive and push it out.

In fifth place, 'Olympus Has Fallen' balanced out after last week's big drop, earning $10 million for a $71 million total. And speaking of big drops, 'Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor' took a massive 53% drop, but it's already made a profit so no one cares, really.

Finally, 'Oz the Great and Powerful' crossed te $200 million mark this week and it now has its eyes on $250 million. It should be able to get there, but this isn't an exact science. In any case, it's the first true blockbuster of 2013 and it did it without being an atrocious 'Alice in Wonderland'-style trainwreck.

Next week sees the release of '42' and 'Scary Movie 5.' Your guess is as good as ours on that one.
