Arwood’s Furniture Fire Believed to Be Accidental
The Warrensburg Fire Department and the Johnson County Fire Protection District responded to a fire at Arwood’s Furniture, 801 Pride Avenue, Tuesday night.
At approximately 8:14 p.m., both departments were dispatched to a confirmed commercial structure fire at Arwood’s Furniture and Mattress.
Initial callers reported hearing an explosion and observing flames coming from the building. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire on the rear exterior of the structure. Firefighters also discovered a utility pole with damaged transformers down adjacent to the building in the fire area. Multiple energized power lines were on the ground, creating additional hazards for responding personnel.

Fire crews initiated an exterior fire attack while coordinating with Evergy to ensure power was safely disconnected to the downed lines and equipment. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the incident, limiting fire extension into the building. Two automatic fire sprinkler heads activated and successfully controlled the interior fire, preventing significant spread inside the structure. As a result, fire, smoke, and water damage were largely confined to the warehouse area of the building.
In addition, approximately 45 firefighters from the Warrensburg Fire Department, Johnson County Fire Protection District, and Whiteman Air Force Base Fire Department responded to the incident.

Johnson County Fire Protection District personnel also provided citywide fire coverage during the event. Additional assistance was provided by the Johnson County Ambulance District, Johnson County Volunteer Fire Auxiliary, Warrensburg Police Department, and Evergy.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and related to the downed utility pole and damaged transformers. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated and released at the scene. No civilian injuries were reported. The business was closed at the time of the fire.
All units cleared the scene at approximately 12:26 a.m. on July 8.
