Janice Johnson, a registered nurse in Women’s Health at Bothwell Regional Health Center, was awarded a $1,225 scholarship to cover the cost of her re-certification as a lactation consultant. The press release states that Johnson has worked at Bothwell for 22 years. “I hope in the future I can serve as Bothwell’s first lactation consultant position and help Bothwell Regional Health Center achieve ‘baby friendly’ status to provide the best choice for exceptional care,” she said.

Baby friendly status refers to a global initiative that aims at improving the care of pregnant women, mothers and newborns at health facilities that provide maternity services for protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

The Foundation also awarded a $2,700 scholarship to Carlos Alegarbes, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Missouri Valley College in Marshall. Alegarbes has worked at BRHC for nine years and is currently a licensed practical nurse in the Skilled Nursing Unit.

The Leadership in Nursing Scholarship is made possible by a bequest from the estate of Patricia Gaunt, who was a registered nurse at BRHC from 1969 until her retirement in 2001. Her bequest provides resources for other nurses to have the training they need to serve the patients they care for each day.
