A special shopping boutique was open for four hours only at the Roger Garlich Activity Center, 4415 Main Street Road, on Sunday, Nov. 16.

The shoppers were Center For Human Services adults with disabilities who plan to attend “Night To Shine” Feb. 13, and needed formal wear for the adult prom being held at First United Methodist Church Celebration Center, 1701 W. 32nd Street.

The fancy clothes on display at the Center were all donated, according to CHS Community Outreach Coordinator Chanisty Lambert. The clothes came from the City of Sedalia, Open Door, Encore Etc., United Methodist Church, MPower (Pettis County Board of Services for the Developmentally Disabled) and various individuals.

Night To Shine will feature food, music, dancing, karaoke, crafts and limo rides.

More volunteers are needed, as each client is paired up with a volunteer, or buddy, for the night, Lambert explained, adding that 125 is the maximum number for the upcoming event.

There are also volunteers who serve food, run the coat rack and perform other duties.

The local event began at least eight years ago, Lambert noted, adding that the Tim Tebow Foundation originally came up with the idea nationwide. “And now it’s locally funded,” she told KSIS.

The bonus for the clients is they get to keep the fancy clothes they picked out at the CHS Boutique and give them a permanent home in their own closet.

“I’m telling you what, there’s a lot of girls out here that been happy, they found a dress that we like. It’s really fun to see them try on dresses and just feel pretty. We’ve been able to suit up a couple guys as well,” Lambert noted.
