UPDATE:  The California boil order was lifted early Thursday morning after the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed all E.coli samples collected on Monday and Tuesday showed the absence of E coli and total coliform bacteria.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources issued a boil order for the City of California on Friday.

On June 29, a routine sample collected from the distribution system was “total coliform” and “E.coli” positive, the DNR said.

Another sample taken on June 30 was found to be “total coliform-positive.” and exceeded the maximum contaminant level for E.coli for the month of June.

California is working with the DNR to conduct additional sampling and investigate the extent of the problem.

The order remains in effect until water samples indicate the contaminant is no longer present, according to a statement from the City, located in Moniteau County.

California residents are urged to boil their water vigorously for three minutes before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, diluting fruit juice, and all other food preparation or consumption.

Also, do not use ice from an automatic ice maker in your refrigerator. Disinfect dishes by immersion in clean tap water that includes one teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled, it was noted.

The boil order "will more than likely continue through the majority of next week," the City said on its website.
