Homicide Suspect Dies in Officer-Involved Shooting in Columbia
At the request of the Columbia Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating an officer involved shooting in Columbia.
Preliminary investigation revealed that on Saturday, February 1, the Columbia Police Department was requested to assist the Moberly Police Department in locating and apprehending a suspect in connection with a homicide in Moberly. The suspect was identified as Timothy T. Turner, 37, of Columbia, Mo.
At approximately 9 p.m., the Columbia Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Crisis Negotiation Teams (CNT) responded to the 1500 block of Raleigh Drive (north Columbia, east of Highway 763) where officers had located the suspect’s vehicle.
Shortly after 10 p.m., Turner exited the residence armed with a knife, and did not comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapon. Law enforcement officers deployed less-lethal devices as well as a police canine, in an attempt to safely take Turner into custody.
Columbia Police said that because the suspect remained a threat to officers as well as the people inside the residence, multiple SWAT officers fired, striking Turner. Medical aid was provided; however, Turner was pronounced deceased at the scene.
One Columbia Police officer was injured by the K9 during the incident and was treated at a hospital.
The investigation is ongoing by criminal investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. Upon completion of the investigation, the reports will be forwarded to the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
