A 44-year old man from Independence, MO now faces additional charges of child sex crimes after further forensics investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control revealed the crimes.

The MSHP says on March 21, a search warrant was executed at the residence of Matthew R. Pohlman, located at E. 51st Street South, in Independence. Investigators seized child pornography and computer equipment. Pohlman was arrested and taken to the Independence Police Department Jail. .

As a result of the initial investigation, the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Pohlman with three counts of possession of child pornography. The Patrol was assisted by Independence Police Department.

During their search on March 21, authorities seized computer equipment which was suspected to have been used to commit the crimes. The equipment was transported to Jefferson City, by the Division of Drug and Crime Control’s Digital Forensics Investigative Unit, for further forensic examination in accordance with the search warrant.

In the weeks following, investigators continued to examine Pohlman’s computer equipment and electronic devices. During the examinations, thousands of files were reportedly reviewed. Officers observed numerous files which led them to believe Pohlman was not only in possession of further child pornography, but that he was also manufacturing child pornography and participating in the sexual exploitation of minors.

The Patrol says in a press release that based upon forensic examination, investigators were able to identify the victims of the crimes.

After locating the victims, officers were able to meet with and interview the victims. The investigation indicated Pohlman committed the sex crimes over a 10-year span, and in more than one county.

Then on Thursday, April 19, Independence Police and MSHP investigators responded to Pohlman’s residence again, where he was arrested without incident and taken to the Independence Police Department Jail.

The Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office formally charged Pohlman with 1st Degree Child Molestation, 1st Degree Statutory Rape, two counts of 1st Degree Statutory Sodomy, 2nd Degree statutory Rape and 2nd Degree Statutory Sodomy.

Pohlman’s bond was set at $100,000. He is currently being held at the Jackson County Detention Center. The Patrol says the investigation continues and additional charges may be sought in other counties.
