I see it all the time—drivers wearing headphones or AirPods while behind the wheel. But how are they supposed to hear emergency vehicles or other important sounds needed for safe driving? So, is it illegal to use headphones or AirPods while driving in Missouri?

Is It Legal to Drive With Headphones in Missouri?

The simple answer is no. Currently, there is no state law prohibiting the use of headphones or AirPods while driving. However, they are considered distracting, and with Missouri’s new “No Hands Law” that went into effect this year, drivers are encouraged to use Bluetooth devices instead when on the road.

Wearing headphones can be a big distraction when it comes to staying aware while driving. With so many people using headphones and AirPods with their devices, I’m honestly not surprised there isn’t already a law prohibiting their use while operating a vehicle.

Why Headphones Are a Driving Distraction

When I’m driving, I notice this more and more with younger drivers, and I just don’t get it. If you already have a radio, CD player, or Bluetooth on your phone to play music, why would you need headphones or AirPods? And if a law does eventually pass, how would police even enforce it? Headphones are easy to spot, but AirPods keep getting smaller and smaller every year.

Could Missouri Pass a Headphone Driving Ban?

Could a law be coming? Possibly. For now, nothing is changing, but if there are increasing reports of accidents or distracted driving tickets tied to headphones or AirPods, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a law put in place sooner rather than later.
