A huge sonic boom just rattled most of northeastern Missouri and west-central Illinois. I can confirm this as it rattled my teeth, too.

A few minutes ago, I felt a huge boom that rattled our radio station building. I'm not the only one who felt it as I've seen multiple reports on social media around Missouri and Illinois from others who are wondering what happened. I checked the known flights over Missouri and Illinois and can't find any military planes that would explain this huge boom.

I remember a few years ago there was a sonic boom over the St. Louis area caused by a plane experiment by Boeing.

I will continue to investigate, but as of right now the source of the boom is unknown. More than likely this is a military plane that's not appearing on the flight trackers the public has access to. My unscientific observation is that whatever plane was responsible was likely flying toward the north based on timing of comments from different areas. Here are the latest comments from our Facebook page.
