Lady Roadrunners Earn First Win With 4-1 Victory Over Scotties
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners defeated Highland Community College-Kansas 4-1 at the Smith-Cotton Soccer Field on Saturday, Aug. 29.
SFCC (1-2) got on the scoreboard first with a goal from freshman forward Syrai Happy with less than 39 minutes to go in the opening half. Happy scored again with about 36 minutes remaining until halftime. Sophomore Idali Nava continued the fast offensive start for SFCC with a goal with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.
Highland answered with their only goal of the contest with 14 minutes remaining in the half to make the score 3-1. SFCC took a 3-1 advantage into halftime. Happy finished her hat trick with another goal with 26 minutes remaining in the match.
Sophomore midfielders Dalia Santiesteban and Melanie Aguirre had assists in the game.
"Our kids were very excited," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Jesus Gonzalez. "They are really happy with the result today after the first two losses. They are starting to understand their positions and they're starting to move a little bit better, especially defensively. I think we can do better in attack. I want to thank everyone who came to watch us."
As a team, the Lady Roadrunners recorded 13 shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Casey Dills got the start in goal for SFCC. Dills made five saves.
The victory was also the first for Gonzalez at SFCC. The Lady Roadrunners will return to action when they host Crowder College on Saturday, Sept.12. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
