Mahomes Isn’t the Only One Who Wants Whataburger in Missouri

Who would have thought Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes tweeting Whataburger that he wanted a store in Kansas City might make that happen. I mean, we've all done something like that. I told Portillo's, my favorite hot dog and beef sandwich joint around Chicago, that they should come to Missouri. I even told them they should bring their food truck to the Missouri State Fair. I'm still waiting for either of those things to happen.

But when you're a well loved former quarterback for Texas Tech. A native Texan. And you have a Super Bowl ring. Well I guess when you talk, people listen. At least Texas Tech football fans and Texas fast food joints.

The Kansas City Star reports that Lee's Summit officials confirmed that Whataburger is talking about opening a location near St. Luke's East Hospital. That said, Whataburger told the paper they have no specific plans for a KC area restaurant “but will be happy to share when — and if — the time is right.”

I get it. Why get people all excited about a restaurant coming to town until you're absolutely sure it's going to happen. For example, when I lived in Lubbock. We were supposed to get an In-N-Out Burger. They bought land. Everyone knew where it was supposed to be. Never happened. They ended up changing their mind and selling the land. It was a big bummer.

I digress. Anyway if you've experienced Whataburger, you know why Mahomes and I want one. If you haven't, let me educate you by quoting founder Harmon Dobson's vision:

a burger so big that it took two hands to hold, and so good that after a single bite customers couldn't help but exclaim, 'What a burger!'

And Whataburger delivers on that promise with burgers that put the Whopper and Big Mac to shame. For those that love flavor the chain delivers too. They feature a Mushroom Swiss Burger, a Sweet & Spicy Bacon Burger, and even a Jalapeno & Cheese Whataburger. Did I mention the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast? And like everything in Texas, everything on the menu is a little bigger.

I don't want to over hype it for you though. Whataburger is definitely fast food in the vein of McDonald's, Burger King, Sonic or Wendy's. It's definitely not a step up like Freddy's or Culver's. Yet, you will be paying prices more in line with Freddy's and Culver's than the king or the clown.

And if you're like me and don't top your burgers with lots of toppings and sauces, you could argue a fresh burger from Wendy's or Sonic might actually be more tasty. That said, a fresh hot Whataburger prepared the way I want it (skip the mustard) paired with a large fries and a chocolate shake is the perfect Texas fast food meal.

The Chiefs Quarterback and I aren't the only people who'd like to see Whataburger in Kansas City, or Missouri. Bizjournals.com says that Texas and Oklahoma natives now living in the Kansas City area have been hankering for a Whataburger for years.

I personally think the fast food restaurant would do well here. So come on Whataburger, open in Kansas City. And then head over to Warrensburg, Sedalia and into Columbia on Route 50. I guarantee you'll sell a lot of Texas sized burgers.
