Man Charged in Shooting of Independence Police Officer
A man has been charged with second-degree assault after authorities say he shot an Independence police officer at a motel.
The Kansas City Star reports that 23-year-old Brandon Mitchell was charged Thursday with armed criminal action. It is unclear if Mitchell has an attorney.
Court records say two officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Deluxe Inn around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday and encountered several people arguing. Authorities say Mitchell ignored several commands not to enter a particular motel room, and that an officer attempted to stop him from entering the room.
Authorities say that during a struggle between Mitchell and the officer, the two fell onto a bed and Mitchell shot the officer in the foot.
The officer, who has not been identified, is expected to recover.
