Sedalia Mayor Andrew Dawson was joined by members of the Sedalia Optimist Club on Monday as he proclaimed Feb. 6 as Optimist Day. Optimist International has 2400 clubs with over 70,000 members.

Standing with Mayor Dawson from left are Tim Noland, past president; Chris Franklin, Charlotte Scholl, Jason Myers, secretary-treasurer; Richard Nelson, Tyler Hudson, board member; Sonny Broyles and Kyle Meek, president.

President Meek said that Past President Tim Noland got him involved in the organization, and said that “it’s all for the youth, so it’s great cause and I was happy to get involved.” Meek said he grew up in the Dresden area and has worked for Callis (a marketing agency) for 10 years.

Some of the fund-raising events that the Optimists engage in include the Haunted Hayride, Fish Fry at Little Big Horn, and the group is also involved in the Boys & Girls Club and Child Safe of West Central Missouri.

“We love guests, anybody who wants to come, just show up,” Meek said. “No commitment, come and see what the club is about, talk to us and meet us. We try to focus all of our funds in the same community where they were raised.”

The Sedalia Optimists meet every Tuesday at noon at the Heckart Community Center, 1800 W. 3rd Street.
