The Missouri State Highway Patrol is searching for the hit-and-run driver who killed a man on a scooter.

The accident happened early Sunday in Jefferson County, killing 44-year-old William Bentley of Pendleton, Indiana.

Bentley was riding the scooter on Highway 30 near Hillsboro. Authorities believe he was struck from behind around 3 a.m. Sunday. Bentley was thrown from the scooter.

Authorities originally found the scooter but no rider. Bentley's body was found about 6 p.m. Sunday when an off-duty sheriff's deputy who was jogging spotted it in the weeds, a significant distance from the scooter. Authorities say the scooter may have been dragged down the highway after Bentley was thrown off.
