SC Team Scream Falls Short In Semi-Finals, Prepares For Next Region Tournament

Team SCREAM (Smith-Cotton Robotics, Engineering And Mathematics) had a good run Friday and Saturday at the FIRST Robotics Greater Kansas City Regional, but came up short in the semifinals.
The team, which had a similar run the previous weekend in the Arkansas Regional, now has its sights set on Oklahoma; that regional takes place March 27-28 in Oklahoma City and is Team SCREAM’s last chance to win a slot in the FIRST World Championships in April in St. Louis.
Team SCREAM finished qualifying rounds as the No. 3 seeded team out of 54 competitors in the Recycle Rush competition, which requires teams to build robots to perform tasks including stacking and moving containers. At the end of the competition, which was won by an alliance of teams from Independence, Blue Springs and Olathe, Kan., Team SCREAM received the Industrial Design Award, largely for its innovative “seatbelt” design which keeps a cylindrical container in place on top of a stack of rectangular totes.
Driver David Wester said the team is confident as it prepares for Oklahoma.
“We plan to go and win. We’re not coming home without gold,” he said.
