Schmitt, Valentine to Face Off in November General Election
Attorney General Eric Schmitt was the big winner on the Republican ticket Tuesday after defeating 20 other candidates vying for the position being vacated by Sen. Roy Blunt, who announced he is not running for re-election.
Schmitt got 298,852 votes, or 45.66 percent of the total Republican votes cast for US senate in Missouri Tuesday.
Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler got 144, 469 votes, or 22.07 percent, to take second place in the race.
Disgraced Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens came in third with 123,982 votes, or 18.94 percent.
Bily Long got 32,555 votes, or 4.97 percent, to take fourth.
And Mark McCloskey came in fifth with 19,505 votes, or 2.98 percent.
Schmitt will face Democratic challenger Trudy Busch Valentine in the Nov. 8 general election.
Valentine beat out 10 other candidates on her party's ticket by garnering 158,583 votes, or 43.16 percent.
In second place was Lucas Kunce with 140,953 votes, or 38.36 percent.
Spencer Toder was a distant third, with only 17,412 votes, or 4.739 percent.
There were 3,012,523 voters who turned out at polling places in Missouri Tuesday, or 69.75 percent, according to the Missouri Secretary of State's website.
The base salary for the US Congressional seat is reportedly $174,000, according to BallotPedia.
AG Schmitt took office in Jan. 3, 2019. Prior to that, he served as Missouri treasurer.for two years.
