
SBW Names Sawyer Woman of the Year, SPD Employer of the Year
Sedalia Business Women named Carol Sawyer their Woman of the Year at their annual Public Relations dinner held at the Sedalia Shrine Club, 1375 Elm Hills Blvd., on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Sawyer’s family and friends attended the dinner, which was catered by the ladies of the Sedalia Senior Center.
Past SBW Women of the Year were on the committee that elected Sawyer. Donna Hirner-Gardner introduced Sawyer to the crowd of about 80 people.
Sawyer has been a member since 2006 and has served on several committees within the organization, including Special projects, Membership, Business Women’s Week, and also co-chairs the Bell Ringing Committee. She is a graduate of Windsor High School and later attended SFCC and the American Medical Record Association, obtaining her ART and AHINA certificates in medical coding.
Sawyer served as director of Medical Records at Windsor Hospital for 10 years, a legal secretary for Cisel and Kopp for 15 years, a licensed Customer Service Representative for American Family Insurance, a manager for Windsor Senior Citizens Housing, office manager for Trans Central Suppliers, and office administrator for Summit Truck Group.
Sawyer has also served on the board of directors for Windsor Ambulance District, Laurel Oak Cemetery, WHS Master Scholarship Endowment Fund, Inc., Monsees Lakes and Covered Bridge HOAs.
Sawyer is also a member of the Pettis County Pachyderm Club, Green Ridge Booster Club and Cornerstone Baptist Church.

The Sedalia Police Department was named Employer of the Year.
That committee consisted of Bobbi Wilson, Madelyn Fisher, Linda Fox and Kire Zykin.
SPD Chief David Woolery accepted the award on behalf of the department, which was originally established in 1882. Today, the department boats 48 sworn officers and eight administrative staff, with there of them in managerial positions.
SPD has a job shadow program for high school students, and utilizes a “non-interview board” to help students learn how to succeed at job interviews. The board is comprised of officers who teach criminal justice courses at the Citizen’s Police Academy, State Fair Community College and UCM in Warrensburg.
The SPD received a $100 tip, which Chief Woolery said would go directly to the "Shop With a Cop” program.
The local SBW recently celebrated Business Women’s Week October 19 – 25.
Guest speaker for the event was Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Gabby White. White was introduced by Lori Haney.
She previously served as assistant director of development for the Boys & Girls Club of West Central Missouri, Inc., before assuming the reins of the Chamber in early April.
White is married and the mother of two daughters, ages six and 15.
First UMC Senior Pastor Candace Fowler led the Pledge of Allegiance and also sang the National Anthem.
Amanda Davis introduced all the guests attending the event.
The Smith-Cotton JROTC Color Guard performed and presented the flags during the opening ceremony.'
Janice Cones named the winning Service Projects for this past year, which were the Sedalia Senior Center and the Community Cafe.
