Sedalia City Council Approves Roadway Changes

On Monday night, the Sedalia City Council approved a recommendation from the Citizens’ Traffic Advisory Commission to reopen S. Washington Ave. between E. 4th Street and E. 5th Street to 2-way traffic and to install a 4-way stop at the intersection of E. 5th St. and S. Washington Ave.

The City of Sedalia says to assist in transitioning the location from its present configuration, the Street Department will post signs on October 30 to inform residents passing through the intersection of the upcoming changes.

The one-way traffic signs will be removed and the stop signs will be installed on November 11.

Removal of the one-way traffic restriction in the block is part of a review process started in August by the Traffic Advisory Commission, which includes input from local citizens.

In making their decision to remove the signs, the Traffic Advisory Commission and City staff considered the removal of the U.S. Postal Services large mail boxes from S. Washington Ave. which originally resulted in the one-way street designation as well as guidance provided by the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the Institute of Transportation Engineer’s Traffic Control Devices Handbook.

The City says the guidance provides cities with guidelines for implementing traffic control, including stop signs based on expected compliance with right-of-way rules, provision of through traffic flow, proximity to other controlled intersections, speed, sight distance, and crash history.
