Sacred Heart Volleyball has had a busy five days, which began on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at Hickman in a four-team Jamboree with Blair Oaks, St. Paul's Lutheran, and Hickman.

The Jamboree consisted of three sets against each team to 15 points.  Varsity won three sets against St. Paul Lutheran and took one set from Blair Oaks.  Sacred Heart came away 4-5, but more importantly, came back to the McGremlin Gym with several things to work on to prepare for their first match which took place Friday night.

Opening the season Friday evening, August 26th against Fr. Tolton High school from Columbia proved to be an exciting night.  Sacred Heart JV lost in two sets 11-25, 7-25.  Sacred Heart Varsity beat Fr. Tolton in three sets 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.  A big home crowd showed up to cheer on the Gremlins.

The Sacred Heart Varsity then headed to a Quad Tournament at Fr. Tolton on Saturday, August 27th.  In round-robin play, Sacred Heart beat Tipton 25-20. 27-26.  They beat Hallsville 25-23, 25-20, and faced Fr. Tolton, again, beating them 27-25, 25-20.  Tournament play began after a short lunch break and Sacred Heart Varsity faced Tipton in tournament play for the opportunity to play in the final.  Sacred Heart defeated Tipton 25-7, 25-20.  Sacred Heart played Fr. Toton for the third time in two days in the finals and lost in three sets 24-26, 25-23, 19-25.

Senior Emma Siron led the team with 66 kills Saturday and 26 digs. Senior Kate Carney contributed 20 kills and 26 digs, and seven combined blocks at the net. Senior Marian Restrepo and Sophomore Sophia Carney had 10 kills.  Junior setter Sammy Altena had 60 assists and 19 digs.

.“I knew it was going to be hard to beat Fr. Toton three times and the girls just ran out of steam. They played hard all day.

“I have seen so much improvement from both the JV and Varsity girls since we began practice on August 8th.  They show up every day ready to work hard.  Each day they are learning, making adjustments, and working hard in the gym to reach their goals.  We wanted a more competitive schedule early in our season . . and here we go!” commented Coach Siron.

Sacred Heart's next match is Monday, Aug. 29 at Marshall.

Sacred Heart Volleyball traveled to Marshall Monday, August 29. The C team won in two sets, JV lost in three very close sets and Varsity won convincingly in three sets.

JV record drops to 0-2 and Varsity record is 6-1. Next action is at Crest Ridge Thursday with JV action beginning at 5:30.
