A shootout in Kansas has left both a police officer and a hit-and-run suspect dead.

Police say the off-duty officer witnessed a hit-and-run accident at 143rd Street and Antioch Road. He then followed the suspect and called it in to Overland Park Police.

The suspect stopped at 123rd and Antioch and exchanged gunfire with the officer as he approached.The suspect, 38-year-old Phillip Michael Carney, died from his injuries at the scene of the shooting in the 8300 block of West 123rd Street. and the officer was transported to a hospital in critical condition. He later died of his injuries, according to Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez.

Officer Mike Mosher was off-duty but in uniform when he saw an apparent hit-and-run and pursued the suspect, who has not been identified. Mosher, who was in his 30s, leaves behind a wife and daughter. He had been with the Overland Park department for almost 15 years.

Overland Park has not lost an officer in the line of duty since 1985, when Ofc. Deanna Rose was killed.
