A few weeks back, the shortlist of directors up for 'Snow White and the Huntsman 2' was made public and it looks like Universal has now made their choice: Frank Darabont, best known for the much beloved 'The Shawshank Redemption,' is currently in talks to helm the film.

This comes from Deadline, and that means Darabont beat out 'Mama' director , and , who directed 'Warrior' and is currently working on the famously troubled production 'Jane Got a Gun.' Universal had been eying a sequel before '' was released as they had David Koepp working on a screenplay, but their plans were put into tumult when the original film's director Rupert Sanders was caught having an affair with leading lady Kristen Stewart. Such led Universal to suggest they may spin off Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman character into his own adventure, which seems to be the direction they're taking the followup.

[Update: The Hollywood Reporter confirms that this will be a spin-off likely titled 'The Huntsman' which will bring back Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, but not Kristen Stewart]

This would be good news for Darabont as he hasn't made a feature film since 2007's 'The Mist,' while his time in television since then has been checkered. He was the original showrunner for 'The Walking Dead,' but was fired off the series, while his 'Mob City' was turned into a miniseries by TNT that lagged in the ratings. 'Huntsman 2' seems like the perfect way to relaunch his film career, so here's hoping it's a good movie.
