Whiteman Air Force Base observed National Police Week (May 15-21) with an opening ceremony early Monday morning on base.

A contingency of Sedalia officials attended the event, including Sedalia Mayor Andrew Dawson and Fourth Ward Councilwoman Rhiannon Foster, City Administrator Kelvin Shaw, Police Chief Matt Wirt, Presiding Commissioner David Dick, four Pettis County Deputies and Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debra Andresen.

Chief Wirt delivered a speech to Whiteman personnel gathered for the occasion.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
