An earthquake shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said, with residents reporting they felt rumbling across the Eastern Seaboard.

No reports of damage have yet been reported, according to the New York Governor's office. There were no reports of disruption in service from Amtrak or the Manhattan Transit Authority.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said during a press conference that this is the largest earthquake felt on the eastern seaboard in the last century. The last major earthquake in New York happened in 2011. Aftershocks are now a concern for residents. About 30 aftershocks have occurred since the initial jolt.

JFK and Newark airports have come to a full ground stop until the situation is declared safe.

This morning's earthquake occurred at 10:23 a.m. ET.

Philadelphia Gov. Josh Shapiro said in a tweet that the earthquake was felt in parts of Pennsylvania.

President Joe Biden was briefed on Friday morning’s earthquake, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.  She posted on social media that the president is “in touch with his team who are monitoring potential impacts.”

Jean-Pierre added that the White House is in “touch with federal, state, and local officials as we learn more."

New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a press conference said there are no reports of  injuries or major damage to infrastructure. Mayor Adams said he has been in contact with the New York Governor's Office and the White House.

NYC EMA Commissioner Zachary Iscol urged residents with damage to call 311. For "life safety events, call 911," he said.

The NYFD is currently evaluating buildings for structural integrity.

NYC Public Schools Chancellor David C. Banks said all schools in the area have been declared safe with no injuries.
