In the many months since director Edgar Wright parted ways with Marvel on 'Ant-Man,' it's been unclear just how much the project would change. With new director Peyton Reed on board and Adam McKay ('Anchorman') brought in to rewrite the script, things are back on track for the film to make its 2015 release date. And thanks to a new interview with McKay, we have a more clear idea about how much has changed between Wright's and Reed's versions of the film -- including how much star Paul Rudd helped shape the script.

In an interview with Collider, writer Adam McKay discussed how Rudd helped bring him aboard the project, first alerting him to the departure of Wright. McKay almost took the job directing 'Ant-Man,' but had too many projects lined up already. In fact, he was hesitant to get involved at all because of his friendship with Wright. Impressed with what Wright had already accomplished, McKay agreed to work on a rewrite, and that's where Rudd's assistance came in:

I’ve always known Paul Rudd’s a really good writer from improvising with him on set, but I had no idea he was that good—he’s really great with dialogue.  So the two of us holed up in hotel rooms on the east and west coast, and I think it was like six to eight weeks we just ground it out and did a giant rewrite of the script.  I was really proud of what we did, I really thought we put some amazing stuff in there and built on an already strong script from Edgar Wright and sort of just enhanced some stuff.

As to how much is Wright's and how much is McKay and Rudd's, McKay explains that it's a fair amount from both:

We added some new action beats.  I grew up on Marvel Comics so the geek in me was in heaven that I got to add a giant action sequence to the movie; I was so excited.  So we did, we added some cool new action.  There’s a lot that’s already in there from what Edgar did, there’s a lot of dialogue and character still in there.

You can read more over at Collider -- and while it still saddens us that we'll never get to see Edgar Wright's 'Ant-Man,' it's good to know that someone like McKay was brought in, who respects and admires Wright, and that he wanted to help and enhance the project to the best of his abilities. It's a really nice interview, and it also gives us hope that Rudd will work on his own script in the near future.

'Ant-Man' hits theaters on July 17, 2015.
