Are You Prepared for a Natural Disaster? — Survey of the Day
Tornadoes in the Midwest. Derechos in the Mid-Atlantic. Fires in the Rocky Mountain region. It seems like no matter where you live in the United States the elements have recently wreaked havoc.
But despite the steady drumbeat of disasters, many Americans haven’t taken even the most basic steps toward emergency preparedness.
According to an Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation survey, 44 percent of adults don’t have a first aid kit in their home. Forty-eight percent lack basic emergency supplies and 53 percent haven’t stocked up on the recommended three-day supply of nonperishable food and water.
Despite the lack of preparedness, the survey’s respondents believe they could last an average of 16 days trapped inside of their home if they had to.
