Brewers GM Doug Melvin Winds Up in Hospital After Bizarre Scorpion Sting

The injury bug has hit the Milwaukee Brewers in a rather strange way.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin spent three hours in a Scottsdale, Arizona hospital Wednesday night after he was stung by a scorpion in the condo where he’s staying during spring training. Amazingly, this may not be the weirdest or most outrageous or lamest baseball injury we’ve heard about in recent months.

Melvin tried to pick up what he thought was an innocent-looking bug with a tissue only to have the Arizona bark scorpion sting him on his left hand. He soon felt numbness in his arm, so he went to the hospital to get himself checked out:
“My arm started swelling and then the numbness started going up my arm, like when you hit your funny bone. I was wondering if it might go all the way up my arm and go to my heart. I got nervous when it got up to my shoulder, so I went to the emergency room.”

The sting wasn’t fatal and he received some medication to help him with the pain (word on the street is Ryan Braun could’ve hooked him up with some stuff that would have had him fully recovered in about 10 minutes).

Melvin may be fine, but he could still learn a thing or two from this woman, who proved you don’t need no stinkin’ hospital.

Of course, we can’t help but wonder if getting stung will give Melvin superpowers, allowing him to pull off trades no other GM can make, like acquiring Albert Pujols for a middle relief Class A pitcher. Only time will tell.

Melvin is also the latest GM this week to suffer a strange injury, joining the Yankees’ Brian Cashman and his broken leg.

So, if you’re a general manager, you may want to think about looking both ways very closely each time you cross the street before Opening Day.
