 Interested visitors are invited to presentations on a variety of historical and cultural topics at the 2014 annual meeting of the Missouri Folklore Society Nov. 6-8 at the Isle of Capri Hotel and Casino and First Presbyterian Church in Boonville.  With the theme of  “Native Nations, Boonslick Traditions” the 108-year old society will feature keynote speakers, music, an auction, and discussions about folk culture ranging from folk tales, Indian lore and history, spinning and weaving to folk medicine, ballads composed by renowned Booville songteller Bob Dyer, and folklore on the internet.  On Thursday evening local playwright and author Mary Barile will speak about Boonslick ghost tales at the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. Friday and Saturday events will happen at the Isle of Capri ballroom and meeting rooms. On Friday, Arrow Rock historian Mike Dickey will speak about the Missouri Indians, both historic and current, and champion gobbler Ralph Duren, formerly of the Missouri Department of Conservation will present an entertaining and educational demonstration of wildlife sounds. On Saturday morning the cast of the musical “Gumbo Bottoms” will perform several songs from the production written by Meredith Ludwig and society member Cathy Barton Para.
         Also highlighted is a session about the Ioway Indians, a tribe with a long and rich history in Iowa and northern and central Missouri, featuring historian Greg Olsen, author of The Ioway in Missouri, and visiting respected tribal historian Lance Foster. Friday afternoon will also include a rare demonstration by Curtis Waggoner of the atlatl, an important ancient Native American weapon.
         A jam session hosted by author and fiddler Howard Marshall will take place on Friday afternoon at the ballroom foyer. Musicians are welcome to come and be a part of this event.
        The society welcomes drop-in visitors, and full, three-day conference registration is $25 for adults and $15 for students.
