Additional Information

The Sedalia Heritage Foundation’s August 'First Friday' event will feature a nineteenth century madam partially based on the life of Sedalia’s own Ms. Lizzie Cook.  Sedalia's red light district was notoriously well known far and wide in the Midwest.  Bawdy houses along Main Street provided marginally profitable, if scandalous occupation for certain women.  Lizzie Cook ran one of the many houses of ill repute in Sedalia known as the  Junction House. The details and struggles of her life, as well as that of other "soiled doves" as they were called, will be depicted by returning historical performer, Lisa Marks.

Mrs. Marks, director of the Hannibal History Museum, returns to the Katy Depot to enlighten us on the difficult, but fascinating lives of fallen women in the prim and proper Victorian era of late nineteenth century America. Mrs. Marks has previously performed here as Molly Brown of Titanic fame as well as a fashionable Victorian lady.

This entertaining and educational evening will kick off on August 5th at 5:30 with refreshments and the program itself will begin at 6:00 pm. The First Friday events are monthly programs that explore our country’s past through guest speakers portraying historical figures or speaking on historical topics of interest.  They are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so reservations are required. Call the Katy Depot at 660-826-2932 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays to reserve your seat.
