Authorities say four men died when a small plane crashed into a southern Illinois farm field.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine Piper PA28 crashed about 3:45 p.m. Sunday under unknown circumstances.

The plane was destroyed upon impact. The crash occurred about 45 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.

Macoupin County Coroner Brad Targhetta says the crash killed the pilot, 35-year-old Joshua Daniel Sweers of Grand Blanc, Michigan, and three passengers: 37-year-old Daniel Shedd of  St. Charles, Missouri; 39-year-old Daniel Schlosser of Mount Morris, Michigan; and 39-year-old John Camilleri of Buffalo, New York.
