Jefferson City - Gov. Jay Nixon today joined hundreds of Missourians on the south lawn of the statehouse to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Missouri State Capitol Cornerstone. In his remarks, the Governor discussed several items that are to be included in the new 2015 time capsule, which will be placed in the cornerstone after state conservators have taken measures to protect the items.

“The re-commemoration of the cornerstone of this magnificent Capitol represents the lessons of our past, the reality of our present, and the promise of our future,” Gov. Nixon said. “Over the past 100 years, new technologies have transformed our daily lives and our economy and I’m certain those changes will occur over the next 100 years,” the Governor said. “But what has not changed, and what will not change, are our shared values – hard work, fairness, and helping our neighbors in need.”

“I am proud that Missourians have always found a way to combine compassion with competitiveness, and tradition with innovation,” the Governor said. “And I am confident that the people of this great state will continue to lead the way forward for our nation in the next century, and beyond.”

The cornerstone was ceremonially re-commemorated by Freemasons from the Grand Lodge of Missouri and the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge. A new plaque was also unveiled which will be affixed to the outside of the cornerstone celebrating its centennial.

Previously, the Governor encouraged Missourians to submit ideas for items to be placed in the new time capsule. Today, the Governor signed a proclamation detailing the other items that will be placed in the new time capsule. That proclamation, which also includes the names of those Missourians who had items chosen, can be found here.
