James Burke “Jim” Carter, 90, of Green Ridge, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

The youngest of seven, he was born November 9, 1924, eight miles south of Holden on Big Creek to the late Homer E. and Bess (Carter) Carter. On January 19, 1950, in Bentonville, AR, he married June Elaine Richardson, and they honeymooned in the state of California. She preceded him in death on August 4, 1981. On July 17, 1982, in Marshall, he married Joan Humphreys and she survives of the home.

His family moved to Pettis County in December of 1924. A young Jim began his farming career milking cows. He was a 1942 graduate of Green Ridge High School. Jim served his country honorably in the US Navy from 1944-1946 on a destroyer in the Pacific during World War II.

He was a long-time member of Green Ridge Baptist Church, served on the Green Ridge School Board for 12 years, special road district, Green Ridge Fire Department, Hickory Point Cemetery Board and was a past treasurer of the Pettis County Cattlemen’s Association.

He enjoyed going to the lake, water skiing, traveling and spending winters in Texas. He loved dancing, farming, telling stories, raising cattle and playing cards.

In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by four children, Mike Carter (Suetta), Karen Brockman (Wes), Sharon Meyers (Johnny) and Vicki Hardy (Charles), all of Green Ridge; two step-children, Diana McCartney (James), of Marshall, and Mark Humphreys (Carol), of Sterling, IL; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, June, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Lucille Meacham, Lucy O’Neil, Landon Harold “Bing” Carter, Homer “Buck” Carter, Fredonia “Freddie” Carter and Wanda Bess Stacey.

Funeral service will be 10 am, Friday, January 30, 2015 at Green Ridge Baptist Church with Pastor John Streit officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons Kit Carter, Crispin Brockman, Damian Brockman, Jake Meyers, Nathan Hardy, Barak Knoernschild, Eric Johnson, Brandon Angus, Kurt Norman and Erik Thurman. Burial will follow in Green Ridge Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the US Navy and VFW Post 2591.

Visitation will be 5pm-7:30pm, Thursday, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
