Joel Matthew Burks, 25, of Sedalia, died Tuesday, August 11, 2015.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin Gormley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will Eric Monsees, Brett Monsees, Kyle Weiss, Keith Weiss, Brent Rhoads, Eric Burks and Tom Hinkin. Honorary pallbearers will be Devon Childers, Trent Lewis, and Derek Johnson. Prayers of the Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with visitation to follow until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Mass offerings be made in Joel’s memory in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.

Born July 26, 1990 in Sedalia, he was the son of Matthew Wayne and Karen Lea Velten Burks, who survive of the home. Also surviving are his sister, Lindsay Burks, of Sedalia; his paternal grandparents, Francis and Bonnie Burks, of rural Slater; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ray and Anna Velten; and an uncle, Dennis Velten.

Joel was raised and educated in Sedalia, and was a 2009 graduate of Sacred Heart High School. He played football for Sacred Heart, and was a member of their first football team. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He worked as a manager for Casey’s, and most recently as manager for the 10th and Thompson Car Wash.
