Authorities say a man who jumped into the Mississippi River and drowned had boasted to friends that he had jumped into the river many times and wanted to do it again.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 40-year-old Joseph Frazier of Granite City, Illinois, jumped from the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in north St. Louis County last month. His body was recovered Wednesday near Granite City.

Madison County, Illinois, Coroner Stephen Nonn says Frazier climbed onto the bridge deck on Sept. 26 and jumped. His girlfriend saw him resurface and float a short distance before he went under.

The coroner's office says Frazier had not made any threats of suicide.
