Mary F. Barnes, 89, formerly of Sedalia, died Friday, October 11, 2013. She was born May 17, 1924 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, daughter of William and Anna Van Auken. Mary and James L. Barnes were married May 5, 1946.

Mary was a U.S. Army nurse during WW II. She was very proud of her "boys', those wounded soldiers she cared for, and the responsibilities she had. She was stationed in Denver, Colorado at Fitzsimmons Hospital.

Mary was a stay at home mother and was very dedicated to raising her children and being involved in their activities. She also painted china and eggs, made decorative candles and floral arrangements and she loved gardening and being outdoors. Mary was a longtime member of Epworth United Methodist Church, a den mother for the Cub Scouts and worked many Pettis County elections, as well as being active in the Pettis County Republican party.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Marsha Schmidt of Waukee, Iowa; her sons, Jeffrey Barnes and his wife Becky of Marshall and Barry Barnes and his wife, Donna of Sedalia; 7 grandchildren, Sam Barnes and his wife Ashley, Dan Barnes, Tim Barnes and his wife Lindsay, Allison Barnes, Chris Barnes and his wife Kim, John Schmidt and Shannon Schmidt; 4 great grandchildren and her sister, Martha Van Auken.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband James L. Barnes; 4 sisters and an infant brother.

Graveside services will be at 1:30PM, Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery. Pettis County VFW Post 2591 will present full Military Honors at the cemetery.

Mary's family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00PM on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Sedalia Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.
