U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, the senior senator from Missouri, today released the following statement recognizing the Fourth of July and the nation's 239th birthday:

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave men and women who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. It’s important we take a moment to celebrate the power of America’s resilient, enduring spirit that makes it the greatest country in the world, as we commemorate its birthday with fireworks, food, and family. I join with all Missourians to honor and thank those who came before us, who helped forge a country that serves as a beacon of liberty and an example of the greatness of democracy to people across the world.”
McCaskill is the daughter of a World War II veteran.
