U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) announced that he will serve as a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services, which has jurisdiction over the study and review of matters relating to the nation’s defense policies.

Missouri is home to almost 18,000 active duty servicemen and women with Whiteman Air Force Base and Ft. Leonard Wood, nearly 10,000 civilian employees, 25,000 reservists and members of the National Guard, and almost 29,000 additional military-related personnel. The state also has more than 125,000 civilian contract employees.

Blunt will depart the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and will continue to retain his positions on the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations; the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and the U.S. Senate Rules and Administration Committee.

“The Senate Armed Services Committee will be faced with a number of critical challenges and responsibilities this year, including dealing with the sequestration cuts. We must rein in Washington’s out-of-control spending, but those cuts should be targeted in a way that does not jeopardize our national security or military readiness,” said Blunt.

“I’ve enjoyed my time in both the House and the Senate serving as a member of the Intelligence Committee, but this is an important time for members of the military in Missouri and around the world,” Blunt continued. “I look forward to starting the critical work facing the Senate Armed Services Committee.”
