Josh Gooch took honors as the top senior competitor and the Smith-Cotton Math Team took first place in Division 1 at Saturday’s Cole Camp Math Relays.

Gooch was first in the Calculus, Random Science, Trigonometry 11/12 and Algebra 12 categories; the S-C senior team of Gooch, Sydney Kocsis and Carter Lapine also took first place in Team Tests. The S-C junior team of Enoc Baeza, Ayla Dillon, Emma Honn and Tara Weng also finished first, and Honn was the top performer in the Probability/Statistics category. Other category wins for S-C came from Caroline Young in Random History, Saarah Baldinger in Geometry 10 and Derek Patton in Hodge Podge.

In the Team Tests, the S-C freshmen (Michylah Hawkins, Erika Hilario, Jade Parkhurst, Val Toderescu) took fourth, the sophomores (Baldinger, Valentyna Usyk, Nathan White, Katya Sheremet) were second and the Mixed Team (Patton, Young, Tyler Thompson, Edward Toderescu) was third.

The team is coached by math teachers Cheryl Ellison, Denise Sturm-Cobblah and Jennifer Crane. Ellison said: “While we had some fantastic results – lots of first through fifth place finishes – there were also a large number of sixth through 10th places, which count toward our school ranking, as well. It took the effort and concentration of our entire team to put us in first place, and I am incredibly proud of everybody.”
