A Smithton man was injured in a one-vehicle accident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Pettis County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a northbound 2013 Toyota Prius, driven by 25-year-old Benjamin V. Karpenchuk of Smithton, was on Birdsong Road, north of Boonville Road around 2:30 p.m., when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch, then a tree.

Karpenhuck suffered moderate injuries and was transported by PCAD to University of Missouri Hospital for treatment. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the report.

The Prius was totaled and towed by InMotion.

Karpenchuk was later arrested by the Patrol at 3:04 p.m. He now faces charges of driving while intoxicated and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.
